As of 2012 the India census, Kallakurichi had a population of 51,854. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Kallakurichi has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81% and female literacy is 67%. In Kallakurichi, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. Kallakurichi is the largest taluk in Tamil Nadu, comprising nearly 268 villages, But at present it has been split into a new Chinnasalem taluk.
Kallakurichi became Town Panchayat in the year of 1960 from village status and subsequently upgraded as Special Grade Town Panchayat. It was further upgraded to Third Grade Municipality from 20th October 2004. Again, this Municipality is upgraded as First Grade Municipality from 09.08.2010. The area of this Municipality is an extent of 11.69 Sq.Km. As per 2011 census, the total population of this Municipality is 51854. This Municipality is divided into 21 wards. Municipal council is functioning headed by the Chairman, along with 21 Councilors.
The town is well connected by roads, with frequent buses from Salem, Coimbatore, Villupuram, Chennai, Bangalore, Erode, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Thiruvannamalai, Trichy, Tirupati and Other surrounding towns.
Kallakurichi is on National Highway 68, which is a four lane Road network connecting Chennai and Villupuram with Salem, Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur, Palagat and Cochin. It also on two State highways - SH-6 (Kallakurichi to Thiruvannamalai) and SH-204(Kallakurichi to Veppur, Trichy road).
